Across the world, people celebrate Christmas as a time to bring joy, giving, and unity into their lives. Celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25th, this event brings together religious and cultural practices from all over the globe. Let’s open the presents of Christmas traditions and find out what makes this season so special.
The Christmas markets, also known as Weihnachtsmärkte, are the beating heart of Germany’s holiday season. Wooden booths offering gingerbread men, mulled wine and ornaments adorn the streets. Baking Lebkuchen and adorning homes with evergreen wreaths and sparkling lights is a family affair.
The nine-day Mexican Christmas celebration known as Las Posadas is based on the story of Mary and Joseph’s journey to find a place to stay. Parades, carols, and colourful piñatas laden with sweets are fun activities for children to partake in.
Cultural diversity is reflected in Christmas dinners. Fried calamari, clams, and baccalà are some of the seafood delicacies served during the beloved Italian Feast of the Seven Fishes.
Christmas is a rich tapestry of customs, meals, and celebrations, all of which contribute something special to the holiday. Christmas is a time to celebrate with loved ones, whether that’s in the snow while singing carols or in the summer while grilling out. If you want to make this year’s festivities even more memorable, why not start a new custom?
