An explosion of colour, music, and dance, the Carnival in Brazil celebrates the unbridled delights of life. Growing up in India, my closest experience with such a big and rhythmic show was Navratri in Gujarat, where garbo and dandiya dances brought the evenings alive. Both festivals celebrate the spirit of community and the joy of movement, but Carnival takes it to a dazzling level.
When i first heard about the carnival, I was in awe at the pictures of samba dancers, colourful floats, and packed streets. It seemed like a dream, a whirl of celebration transcending simple celebration to become a cultural phenomenon.
Should I ever go to Carnival, I would picture myself in awe of the artistic quality of the procession floats—each more complex than the next. The samba drums’ rhythm would reach deep within me and inspire even the quietest soul to move. Carnival is a celebration that speaks to my conviction in common human connections since the very energy and oneness of people gathering together, regardless of their backgrounds.
During Lohri, neighbours gathered around bonfires, singing traditional songs and distributing rewri and peanuts, our own sort of communal celebration back home Although the scene was different, the fundamental lesson was that sharing joy increases its intensity.
Surrounded by students from more than 50 countries in Toulouse, I see hints of Carnival’s energy in the multicultural activities we stage. Whether it’s sharing Indian music or picking up other nations’ traditional dances, the core of celebration ties us all. Celebrations such as Carnival help me to appreciate the beauty of variety and how it enhances our life.
For me, Carnival is evidence of the human ability for creativity and connection rather than just a grand spectacle. Regardless of our background, this event teaches us to let go of constraints, welcome our passions, and dance to the rhythm of life and what better than Brazilian music?
